iPad’s Future: What it Means to the Competition and Education, Business, and Healthcare Industries

March 29th, 2011   |  4:25 PM EST iPad's Future: What it Means to the Competition and Education, Business, and Healthcare Industries

When the iPad hit the market in 2010, it was by no means the first tablet. Apple developed a rudimentary tablet, but more like a PDA, called The Newton in 1993. Bill Gates developed Microsoft’s first tablet in 2002 and coined the term “tablet PC”. However, it was not until Steve Jobs at Apple officially released the Apple iPad with iOS that the whole idea of the tablet computer became the new method of consuming information. Apple advertised the iPad as the new way to send email, check weather, and read newspapers from around the world. However, the population is starting to realize the iPad as a tool that can be used not only as a way to consume information, but as a tool in business to work faster and smarter.

Parents are able to use the iPad to read books to their children at night, such as Dr. Seuss’s ABC. Spelling for iPad teaches children spelling, and games such as Fruit Ninja can help a child’s hand/eye coordination. Teachers can use the Bento for iPad app to keep track of lesson plans and notes about each student. They can use the app Mobile Mouse to turn the iPad into a wireless remote for the classroom. Teachers would also be able to take their work home with them more easily and not chance forgetting their lesson plans at school. Teachers can use the Keynote app to create classroom presentations to engage the children during class.

Special Education teachers have apps available to them for the iPad that help with children who require extra attention with their learning needs. Typ-O HD is an app that Dyslexic children can use that will predict the words they are trying to use. It also has a text to speech feature to help the child listen to what they wrote to make sure the correct words were used. Children with speech and sound delays can use an app called ArtikPix that engages the child with flashcards and matching activities.

The iPad is showing up more frequently in business settings, thanks to apps such as Dropbox and GoodReader to keep files handy for employees who spend the day away from their desks. There are notepad apps as well sketch apps that allow employees to jot down ideas during business meetings and conference calls. Salespersons can use the iPad as a way to pitch their company to new clients and streamline all the paperwork involved. Apps can also be used on the iPad to keep track of inventory instantly within a warehouse.

Healthcare workers are starting to use the iPad to keep track of patient information by using an app called Epic Canto. The iPad makes getting patient’s medical history faster and more accurately. Doctors are also able to research online for certain types of symptoms, medications, or diseases if they need to. This takes some of the guesswork out of diagnosing patients, or time it takes to flip through a huge medical book, as well as helps remind doctors what medications interact with other medications.

iPad's Future: What it Means to the Competition and Education, Business, and Healthcare Industries 4

Doctors who specialize in Cardiology can use an app called CTSNetWiki that was specifically developed by a heart surgeon so doctors and patients can predict heart surgery risks. It also allows students and residents prepare for procedures. Doctors also have the Internet at their fingertips with the iPad, allowing them to not only explain a diagnosis to a patient, but also the ability to use educational videos and diagrams online to explain an illness in depth to a patient. Plastic Surgeons can use sketches to demonstrate how a procedure will take place and also draw out how their body will look before and after surgery. Another app that is of benefit to health care professionals is called Core. This allows orthopedic doctors figure out which joint has been injured by using specific diagrams. For each ligament, there is step by step instructions the doctor can follow in order to help the doctor make a diagnosis. Motion Doctor is also a great app for physical therapy.

Apps are being developed everyday as the population is starting to see the potential the iPad has for their unique business needs over the Motorola Xoom and Galaxy Tab. It has a bigger screen than most competitors, and the iPad is easy to pick up and learn how to use. The iPad 2 is lighter and thinner in design than both major competitors. The iPad has a screen wide enough that you can see the entire width of a standard piece of printer paper. This allows for less scrolling than both the Xoom and the Tab. The battery life of the iPad is longer than competitors so far, making it ideal to walk around with all day and not worry about having to recharge during that important lesson plan or patient meeting. Apple is also the company that has the biggest App store, allowing everyone to find apps that will work for their individual needs easier than other competitor’s platforms. There is no doubt the iPad is taking over not only casual life, but also education, business, and healthcare.

The deals just keep on coming from AT&T. First they knocked off $100 from the original price of first-generation iPad 3G models when the iPad 2 was announced. Now they’re taking off even more!

Great prices on first-generation iPad 3G:

$429 for 16GB$529 for 32GB$529 for 64GB

It looks like they’re really trying to get rid of the higher end 64Gb capacity model with its pricing being the same as the 32GB one. But that shouldn’t be a problem as of right now because it appears AT&T has sold out of the 32GB first-generation iPads.

Of course, data plans are required to enjoy the 3G option in your iPad.

The Great iPad 2 Teardown of 2011

March 11th, 2011   |  11:03 PM EST

For some, it was a dark and dreary day. For others who languished in the geek lust of gigabytes, it was a joyous time filled with madness only Dr. Frankenstein could dream of.

Just when the iPad 2 thought it would be sold into a good home, its dreams of years of playful and continued use came to a swift and abrupt end at the hands of the devious and ravenous villains at iFixIt.com.

The Great iPad 2 Teardown of 2011

Plucked from the retail shelves of its maker, the Apple device soon was torn asunder to satiate the nerdy appetite of techies across the country. “What’s in it?”, they asked. “We’ll show you”, replied iFixIt.

The Great iPad 2 Teardown of 2011 2

The A5 processor has manufacture dates of late January and mid-February 2011. Production was clearly ramping up through the last minute. It looks like the A5 processor is the APL0498, replacing the A4/APL0398 seen in the iPad 1 and iPhones.

The Great iPad 2 Teardown of 2011 3

Ripped from its metallic insides was the central processing unit, the A5 dual-core processor.

As screwdrivers took to the bearings that held the device together, iPad 2 knew it was soon to be scattered into pieces, a RAM chip here, a rear-facing camera there. No more was the tightly held together sum of its parts, iPad 2 was now rendered useless and separated.

iPad Skins

Lifting off the LCD exposes the iPad 2?s battery; A 3.8V, 25 Watt-hour unit. That’s just a hair more than the original iPad’s 24.8 Watt-hours, so any improved battery performance can be attributed to software and other hardware improvements.

The Great iPad 2 Teardown of 2011 4

The Wi-Fi board; powered by another Broadcom chip, a BCM43291HKUBC. Broadcom has made this Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM tuner combo chip a ubiquitous part for smartphones – lots of design wins.

The Great iPad 2 Teardown of 2011 5

But hey, that’s life. Sometimes you get the short end of the stick. And now that the gory part is over, we can finally see what’s inside Apple latest generation of the iPad tablet. Read about the complete teardown with great pictures of each step during the process.

iPad App Review: Geo Walk HD – 3D World Fact Book

April 7th, 2011   |  9:53 AM EST iPad App Review: Geo Walk HD - 3D World Fact Book

Why not learn about the entire world by touching your iPad?

Tired of not knowing anything about viper fish? Or the pink fairy armadillo? Have you ever wanted to know more about Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen? Well now learning more about items you never knew you didn’t know about is as easy as touching a screen and then reading some words with GEO Walk HD.

Opening the app shows you a globe, which you can make spin just like the one that hides your alcohol. As you spin the globe, pictures pop up around the world on various countries and islands. Unlike conventional globes, the digital version here cab be spun along its axis, but can also be rotated north to south. Which kind of makes you feel like some kind of omnipotent being. At any rate, clicking on a picture zooms in on it, and touching the icon in the bottom right corner flips the picture over. On the other side is information about the person, place, animal or plant in the picture. If you feel overwhelmed by pictures as you circumnavigate the globe with your finger, feel free to turn off a few of the groups by clicking on their respective icons at the bottom of the screen. If you only want to learn about the plants of the world, click the other items off, and you’ll be an amateur botanist in no time.

iPad App Review: Geo Walk HD - 3D World Fact Book 2

You can also forgo spinning the globe and view each photo in a gallery mode, which allows you to scroll through the photos like you might pictures of your second cousin’s newborn baby. The facts are still available by flipping the pictures over with the button on the corner. As you learn more about Erman’s Birch or the Star-Nosed Mole or the Hypogeum of the Volumnis, you can take advantage of GEO Walk’s quiz feature, which asks a trivia question and lays a few pictures out for you as optional answers. All in all, it’s fun way to learn a little about lots of things, and is great for curious kids or adults who enjoy wikipedia hopping.

iPad App Review: Geo Walk HD - 3D World Fact Book 3

There’s just one major flaw, and that’s the syntax and grammar for almost every single factoid in the app. There seems to be one or two definite articles missing from each fact. Take this question about Machu Pichu: “Which city of Incas also called “The Lost City of the Incas?” or, my personal favorite, this write up on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. It stretches over the East River and is of 5,989 fee (1825m) long. This bridge connects the New York City of Manhattan and Brooklyn. At that time it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Besides, it used to be the first steel-wire suspension bridge.

“Besides, it used to be the first steel-wire suspension bridge” is a fantastic sentence, but my guess is the word the author was looking for is “also.” It’s as though all the facts were written in a foreign language, and then translated into English, or by someone whose command of English is strong, but not quite strong enough to write informative facts about the Musky Caiman without making a few mistakes. Version Two could improve on Version One by cleaning up these grammatical errors, as there’s no use in teaching your kids about the Atlantic Wolffish if in the process they lose their ability to speak English correctly.

All in all though, GEO Walk is an interesting app, and a great way to kill time by learning a little bit about your world.

App Store: $2.99

Toddlers and Their iPads

March 20th, 2011   |  11:14 AM EST

Here are some intriguing videos of toddlers using and enjoying the iPad. These kids flip through screens and manipulate apps like it’s second nature to them. A whole new generation is growing up with more intuitive learning tools, and new ways to have fun. These kids aren’t necessarily “baby Einsteins”, but average children benefiting from the possibilities of what their iPad can do and what can be gained from it. It’s becoming more than a media consumption device.

More videos after the break.

Apple Calls iPad 2 Sales ‘Amazing’, May Have Sold 1 Million

March 14th, 2011   |  3:55 PM EST Apple Calls iPad 2 Sales 'Amazing', May Have Sold About 1 Million

An Apple spokesperson via The Loop said:

“Demand for the next generation iPad 2 has been amazing. We are working hard to get iPad 2 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible.”

Apple also neglected to mention the number of iPad 2s sold since last Friday. Considering there was nary an iPad 2 to be found at a retail store this morning, across the country, it’s likely Apple lived up to some analysts’ estimates that iPad 2 sales could reach at least 500,000 units this past weekend.

AppleBitch.com made note of a rumor that some Apple retail stores may open an hour early Tuesday morning in anticipation of large crowds wanting to clean up on replenished iPad 2 stock. “If the Apple Stores were re-stocked today, the iPad 2 would not be sold until tomorrow”. Calls to some Apple stores made by AppleBitch and MacRumors confirm some are opening an hour early tomorrow, at 9am.

Fortune sums up analyst speculation on this past weekend’s iPad 2 sales:

Most analysts were cautious, fearing perhaps that whatever they wrote would soon be overtaken by an Apple (AAPL) press release. Most, like Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, stuck with 500,000 units. But Baird’s William Power estimated that Apple sold “roughly 1 million” the first weekend, Wedbush’s Scott Sutherland “wouldn’t be surprised” by that number and Global Equities Trip Chowdhry thought Apple “may have sold” three times as many iPad 2s as iPad 1s its first weekend, which amounts to the same thing.

Deutsche Bank’s Chris Whitmore thinks Apple has gained an “insurmountable lead” in the tablet market in a note to investors today. During a poll of 100 iPad 2 retailers, Whitmore found all of them out of stock by yesterday.

Apple Calls iPad 2 Sales 'Amazing', May Have Sold 1 Million

J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz thinks Apple’s tablet competition like the Samsung Galaxy Tab and Motorola Xoon “have experienced disappointing adoption curves”. Apple’s market share may widen even more, as made evident by this past weekend’s sell out craze.

Brian White from Ticonderoga Securities echoed the other analysts’ sentiments and stuck with his forecast of about 1 million iPad 2s sold on launch weekend, thinking there was enough demand to exceed his target if there was enough supply.
