According to Microsoft, specifically the company’s chief research and strategy officer, tablet devices such as the Apple iPad are nothing more than a passing fad.
Seeing the smartphone as the actual successor to the PC, Microsoft’s Craig Mundie, speaking in Sydney at the Committee for Economic Development of Australia questions whether tablets will “remain with us or not.”
From Mundie:
“Today you can see tablets and pads and other things that are starting to live in the space in between (a PC and a smartphone). Personally, I don’t know whether that space will be a persistent one or not.”
Believing that smartphones will succeed the PC, Mundie also sees a time when the desktop PC is replaced by “the room.” In this scenario, a person’s home computer will be usurped by a system where individuals interact with a computer wherever they are in a room powered by something similar to the Microsoft Kinect.
Mundie’s comments may be nothing more than sour grapes. Microsoft has failed to gain any sort of foothold in the tablet market while Apple has sold 15 million first generation iPads and has experienced similar, high, demand for iPad 2.
Apple’s Steve Jobs believes the iPad is leading the transition to the “uncomfortable” post-PC era of computing, likening them to “trucks.”
Mundie’s boss, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, countered Jobs’ statements by saying “There may be a reason they call them Mack Trucks,” referring to Apple’s Mac line of computers, “but Windows machines are not going to be trucks.”
