“Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away…” (cue Star Wars music). NASA offers an amazing free app for iPad users to explore the Solar System as well as NASA pictures and videos. Any adult or child fascinated with space will definitely enjoy the NASA App HD.
Upon launching the app, the user is greeted with a beautiful picture of our Solar System, with the planets, Pluto, and the ISS labeled, as well as the Universe and asteroids, meteors, and comets. Tapping any labeled object brings up a page with an abundance of knowledge. There are detailed descriptions of the planet’s size, mass, temperature, and distance from the Earth for planets. There are also amazing pictures of the planets and cool facts.
The app also features a great section for space related news. From news on NASA’s history to space technology, the news section has many interesting reads. Plus, each article can easily be shared on Facebook, Twitter, or e-mailed.
The NASA app also has a button that links to a Google Map with all fifteen NASA locations. Tapping on any pin brings up a link to the location’s website or visitor website. If you ever want to know when a rocket or shuttle will be launched, the NASA app features a calendar with launch dates.
My favorite feature of the NASA app is the video section. There are tons of videos of NASA news, shuttle landings, and interviews. There is also a cool section of the app called NASA TV. NASA TV streams a live feed of the Earth and current Space Shuttle Missions.
Overall, this is a really cool app for any space junkie. The NASA App HD is jam packed with knowledge and presents it in a fun, factual way. If you want a free app that is awesome, be sure to download the NASA App HD.
