Comixer-The Comics Mixer ($2.99, on sale for $1.99) is a storyboard creation app for kids (parents too), and is loads of fun. With Comixer users are presented with a number of pre-created cartoon style tiles/panels (currently 75), and can drag and drop them onto the storyboard in any order they see fit. Each story can be whatever the user wants it to be; funny, nonsense, serious, whatever. By using the pre-made panels that include a princess, a knight, ogre, king, fairy, and others, kids create these comics with ease and imagination. The great part of it is, it takes no time at all, and can then be emailed, saved to the Photos app, or shared on Facebook.
Click To EnlargeThe app is built by Nickelodeon Magazine founder Laura Galen, digital editor Carmen Morais, and comics editor Chris Duffy. They came together and created an app that is very entertaining for kids and is something that gives them the satisfaction of creation and sharing. The panels are the result of collaboration of Robert Leighton (a gag cartoonist) and alternative-comics legend Johnny Ryan. What this means, is that this is not put together by a bunch of people looking to make a quick buck on a new trend. You can tell they truly enjoyed making this app, and really feel strongly about its presence in the App Store, and on the iPad of those who purchase it.
I love this app, and my kids had a blast. Kids ages 4 to pre-teen could easily have a good time creating fun comics without having to do much more than using their imagination and dragging and dropping panels. That said, I’d love to see a few additions. Specifically more panels added. Currently there are 75 to choose from, which is a decent amount…but they are a little limiting I have to admit. Sure, it’s not about creating a real coherent story, that’s part of the fun of it, but more choices would be welcomed. That said, if they DO add more, I’d hope to see a categories option. Give users the ability to see ALL panels, or sort by type (words, ogre, princess, knight, etc). Secondly, more sharing options. The app features a few sharing possibilities, but more would be great. Maybe even a way to allow users to share their Comixer comics with other Comixer users? Like an online gallery of sorts.
Overall this is one of those apps that just doesn’t need a ton of writeup to be covered. Comixer is a quality app that kids and parents will love using together. It’s built in a user-friendly way and has room to grow (meaning quality updates in the future I would think). Check it out!
